Lightning Ridge and Bourke airports secure $1.3 million for upgrades

Media Release

Member for Barwon Kevin Humphries today welcomed a NSW Government announcement that Bourke and Lightning Ridge Regional airports have secured more than $1.3 million in upgrades.

Mr Humphries said the funding is a much-needed investment in Western NSW providing a platform for jobs, and economic and tourism growth.

“The $1.3 million in upgrades at Bourke and Lightning Ridge Regional Airports will support tourism and access for health and emergency services,” Mr Humphries said.

“At Bourke, $570,000 to reseal the runway will enable the airport to remain operational for years to come.

“In Lightning Ridge, $742,700 will help to lengthen the shortest runway in the region and improve navigation safety facilities.

“These investments support other work we are undertaking to enhance regional air services announced in October, opening a tender for air operators to submit proposals to provide air services to Dubbo, Bourke and Walgett in Western NSW,” he said.LRsign001

Minister for Regional Development, Skills and Small Business John Barilaro said the project is among 17 successful projects to receive funding from the Government’s Regional Tourism Infrastructure Fund.

“By funding regional airport infrastructure we’re making a long term investment to create jobs and improve services for residents to support airports with the greatest capacity to increase visitor numbers, stimulating the NSW regional economy,” Mr Barilaro said.

“Projects include terminal upgrades, apron and runway improvements, investment in airport emergency services, lighting upgrades and other vital works to accommodate more and larger aircraft and to improve safety and services.”

A further 10 project elements submitted in this round of detailed regional airport infrastructure proposals require additional information to be provided by proponents for further consideration for funding, with final assessment of these projects expected to be completed in the New Year.
