Students and staff host Governor of Queensland during Goondiwindi visit
STUDENTS and staff of the Goondiwindi State School had the honour of hosting the Governor of Queensland during a special visit on Wednesday morning.
Mayor of the Goondiwindi region Lawrence Springborg welcomed Governor de Jersey to the region and thanked him for his visit on behalf of residents.
His Excellency the Honourable Paul de Jersey stopped in at the school during a visit to the region to meet with members of Goondiwindi Regional Council.
“This was part of his Excellency’s first visit to regional Queensland since the COVID-19 crisis limited travel. This is his first overnight stay outside of Brisbane since February, and we are delighted with the honour that the Governor has given our community,” Cr Springborg said.
The Governor also held an industry breakfast and community morning tea this morning. Due to social distancing requirements and precautions around COVID-19, these meetings unfortunately had to be kept small in scale with limited numbers in attendance.
“Governor de Jersey is a great friend and advocate for regional Queensland and I greatly appreciate this opportunity to meet with His Excellency, and to brief him on our great community and the opportunities it offers,” Cr Springborg said.
The Governor of Queensland is the State’s representative of Her Majesty The Queen.
Cr Springborg also thanked the staff and students of the Goondiwindi State School.
“I have to say a big ‘well done’ to the staff and students who did an outstanding job of hosting Governor de Jersey and offering their hospitality today, especially bearing in mind the challenges of social distancing and precautions around COVID-19,” Cr Springborg said.
“The only disappointment we have is that numbers to meet with His Excellency have had to be limited, due to the current restrictions.”
