Letting Moree’s garbos enjoy Christmas Day, too
SANTA Claus won’t be the only one at work early on Christmas Day – Moree garbage collectors will start their shifts earlier than usual, too.
Residents in Moree may hear rattles and bangs in the street from 4am on Christmas Day when the town’s hardworking ‘garbos’ begin emptying wheelie bins.
The earlier start will allow garbage collectors working for Cleanaway – contracted to provide waste collection services for Moree Plains Shire Council – to finish their workday earlier so they can be at home with their families on Christmas Day.
Moree Plains Shire Council’s acting waste manager Tahra Sayers explained the earlier than usual start to the collection means residents need to put their bins out on the street the night before.
“Residents whose collection day is Monday, will have their garbage collected up to two hours earlier during the festive period, so residents will need to make sure bins are put out the night before,” Ms Sayers said.
The Shire’s Waste Management Facility at Moree and all village landfill sites, which are normally open on Mondays, will be closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
Ms Sayers also urged people to be environmentally thoughtful about how waste is disposed over the festival season.
“Remember to use the yellow wheelie bin for recycling of cardboard and wrapping paper, cans and bottles; while food waste and tree pruning’s can be put into the green wheelie bin; and e-waste (old mobiles, TVs) can be taken to the Waste Management Facility (free of charge) for recycling,” Ms Sayers said.
